Nursing home violations

we trust them to take care of our moms our dads and our grandparents but Channel 2 investigates has discovered disturbing violations at nursing homes across our state violations like bed sores neglect and abuse channel 2 investigator Amy Davis found our state is among the worst when it comes to caring for vulnerable adults tonight she's revealing some of the most serious infractions and a lack of enforcement and accountability Parkinson's disease stole 65 year old Diane words voice her mobility and her mind but what happened here at Willowbrook residents and Rehabilitation Center last year robbed her of her dignity and I put it her daughter Ronde a Crenshaw okay I did that we haunts me they know that I did that and that she in that way court documents tell the haunting story police say Woodard bed-bound and nonverbal was sexually assaulted by another resident of the nursing home caught in the act by a nurse's assistant who noticed Woodards call light on and her door closed my mom was not able to physically press but her head just happened to beat against the button so that's why the light went on but attorney Charles Brown says what happened in the minutes and hours after the sexual assault is also criminal the first call that the facility made wasn't to the police it wasn't to a physician it was to their corporate office to figure out what to do state records reveal nurses did not immediately call police or a physician and when they called the victim's daughter there was no mention of an assault a man was found in her room but she wasn't touched is what they told me she rushed a Willowbrook to find her mom fully dressed in her wheelchair at the nurse's station she was sleep I kissed her I looked at her and she looked fine so I said okay she's okay and I left but hours after the attack she says the nurse who walked in on the assault sent her a message detailing what she claims actually happened and the order she says she was given by her boss to downplay the crime how would you have ever known if it wasn't for the nurse feeling guilty I wouldn't have it was the exact type of situation Texas lawmakers hoped to end when they passed a new law in 2017 it was supposed to crack down on nursing homes with repeat violations by imposing hefty fines Willowbrook wasn't fined state records show a month before Woodards rape the Department of Health and Human Services recommended the revocation of the facilities license for unrelated violations including failure to treat bed sores on multiple patients or alert a doctor to the wounds but just a month after Woodards assault and the homes failure to report it the agency changed its mind resending the order we asked but the state won't explain the about-face that's a I think that they need to be held accountable all nursing home factors will abou because Willowbrook is not alone we found of Texas 1,200 nursing homes more than 400 received the worst possible score from federal regulators but Channel 2 investigates learned the state of Texas didn't revoke the license of a single nursing home last year and some were repeat offenders until we have some form of consequences for nursing homes that hurt people we will never have quality nursing homes for the state of Texas in our area last year the nursing homes with the most severe deficiencies were Oakmont health care and rehabilitation center of Humble the vast wood Nursing Center on South boss and the Galleria residents and Rehabilitation Center only vast wood and the Galleria residents returned our calls the Galleria saying they have made pervasive changes at the facility and a vos would representative said any deficiencies received during the last 12 months have been addressed and corrected while Ron dia is still waiting for answers her mom died with no justice it's like they don't care about the nursing homes I think they get all the way with a lot of things because they don't I mean look at it and I think the best way to research nursing homes and their most recent inspections is on the federal Nursing Home compare website will link you there on click2houston.com even after you choose a facility visit your loved one often to make sure nurses and staff and know who you are it wouldn't have prevented Woodards assault but her daughter believes that nurse wouldn't have come forward with the truth if she hadn't seen her there with her mom Amy Davis KPRC channel 2 news if you have a story for Channel 2 investigates call the tip line 7 1 3 2 2 3 tips or you can email investigates at KPRC calm
